Before I go to bed, I text Nicholas. âYou okay?â
Not long after, âIâm cool.â
âNite. Love ya.â
âLove ya too.â
Now Iâll sleep okay. The smell of Renéeâs perfume is a distraction, but I allow Gaffer onto the bed. He could do with a bath. It helps mask the odour.
Itâs morning and Iâm in the shower before I remember Lesterâs envelope. Towel around me, still half-wet, Iâm parading around the house, trying to remember where I put it. Itâs nowhere to be found.
Iâm certain I didnât leave it at the bar. I get dressed and go outside and search the car. Nothing.
And again the house. Still nothing.
One explanation circles my mind. Renée. For whatever reason, she stole it. Her handbag was certainly big enough to conceal the envelope.
Thereâs something up. Do I confront her when I get to the hotel later in the morning? If she did take it sheâd simply deny it and Iâd have no access to her room to prove otherwise. And I canât call asshole Olsen since heâs the one who should have possession of the envelope. I feel myself floundering towards a brick wall.
Besides, I am supposed to meet them at 9:30 and itâs after 8 and I need to go to the hospital and see whatâs up with Lois.
Normally Iâd take Gaffer for a morning walk before I leave the house. No time, except a minute in what passes for a backyard so he can do his business. âSorry, kid. Nick will be by in a few hours. Hold the fort.â I toss him an extra couple of treats, and Iâm out the front door and on my way. Except once I get in the car I realize I forgot my sunglasses. Ryan, the weather guy, did promise sun all day. Iâll need them.
The nursing staff at Health Sciences is not thrilled to see me arrive so early in the morning. Visiting hours donât start until 11, but there it is, what can I do but pretend I work for the RNC and stress that the visit will be short and to the point. As it turns out Lois/Lois Ann isnât in her room. She has been taken to the x-ray unit.
Her roommate looks at me from the other side of her breakfast tray. âDecided to rejoin the common folk, did we?â
I ignore it. âPlease tell Lois I came by and that I hope sheâs feeling better. Ask her to phone me if sheâs being released.â I leave her my card. âShe can call my cell.â
âI havenât got my glasses on. Whatâs your name again?â
âSebastian.â
âThatâs right. How could I forget? She said it enough times.â
I halt my move towards the door. She can see I need an explanation. She lets me dangle in anticipation.
âIn her sleep. That name of yours, over and over. Not very flattering, I have to say.â
âI work for the RNC. Iâll have to ask you to elaborate.â
âA cop. Oh, my.â
âJust tell me what she said.â
âShe called you aâ¦Iâm afraid I canât say it out loud.
