Before I go to bed, I text Nicholas. ‘You okay?’

Not long after, ‘I’m cool.’

‘Nite. Love ya.’

‘Love ya too.’

Now I’ll sleep okay. The smell of Renée’s perfume is a distraction, but I allow Gaffer onto the bed. He could do with a bath. It helps mask the odour.

It’s morning and I’m in the shower before I remember Lester’s envelope. Towel around me, still half-wet, I’m parading around the house, trying to remember where I put it. It’s nowhere to be found.

I’m certain I didn’t leave it at the bar. I get dressed and go outside and search the car. Nothing.

And again the house. Still nothing.

One explanation circles my mind. Renée. For whatever reason, she stole it. Her handbag was certainly big enough to conceal the envelope.

There’s something up. Do I confront her when I get to the hotel later in the morning? If she did take it she’d simply deny it and I’d have no access to her room to prove otherwise. And I can’t call asshole Olsen since he’s the one who should have possession of the envelope. I feel myself floundering towards a brick wall.

Besides, I am supposed to meet them at 9:30 and it’s after 8 and I need to go to the hospital and see what’s up with Lois.

Normally I’d take Gaffer for a morning walk before I leave the house. No time, except a minute in what passes for a backyard so he can do his business. ‘Sorry, kid. Nick will be by in a few hours. Hold the fort.’ I toss him an extra couple of treats, and I’m out the front door and on my way. Except once I get in the car I realize I forgot my sunglasses. Ryan, the weather guy, did promise sun all day. I’ll need them.

The nursing staff at Health Sciences is not thrilled to see me arrive so early in the morning. Visiting hours don’t start until 11, but there it is, what can I do but pretend I work for the RNC and stress that the visit will be short and to the point. As it turns out Lois/Lois Ann isn’t in her room. She has been taken to the x-ray unit.

Her roommate looks at me from the other side of her breakfast tray. ‘Decided to rejoin the common folk, did we?’

I ignore it. ‘Please tell Lois I came by and that I hope she’s feeling better. Ask her to phone me if she’s being released.’ I leave her my card. ‘She can call my cell.’

‘I haven’t got my glasses on. What’s your name again?’

‘Sebastian.’

‘That’s right. How could I forget? She said it enough times.’

I halt my move towards the door. She can see I need an explanation. She lets me dangle in anticipation.

‘In her sleep. That name of yours, over and over. Not very flattering, I have to say.’

‘I work for the RNC. I’ll have to ask you to elaborate.’

‘A cop. Oh, my.’

‘Just tell me what she said.’

‘She called you a…I’m afraid I can’t say it out loud.
